new gas chromatograph in laboratory of analytical chemistry

In August 2018 our laboratory of analytical chemistry purchased a brand new gas chromatograph, mass spectrometer Shimadzu GCMS-QP2020, equipped by a thermal desorption unit TD-30, which is used for analysis of emissions of organic substances.

The spectrometer has a superior sensitivity for organic substances in orders of micro-grams per kg of sample. The system is mainly used for analysis of volatile organic substances (VOC) and condensable substances (FOG) according to the requirements of automotive standard VDA 278, but also for emission measurement of polymer samples to investigate additive system, smell, NIAS (not-intentionally added substances in plastics) etc.

Determination of phthalic acid esters according to requirements of CPSC

In June 2018 analytical laboratory ITC accredited new procedure for determination of phthalic acid esters in consumer products according to requirements of CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) No. CPSC-CH-C1001-09.4. New standard came in force on April 25, 2018 and released old one No. CPSC-CH-C1001-09.3.

ISO 50001 - Energy management

Management systems certification » Certification of management system

The effective energy management is a trend, which gradually crosses from the category of “business advantage” to the category of “necessary requirement of the age”. The “energy management” is a summary of all activities, which search for areas with significant energy consumption, monitor the energy intensity and optimize it using system tools. The energy management can have immediate results in the shape of cost savings for energy consumption; however, its long-term contribution is more significant. The ISO 50001 standard comprises a summary of requirements whose fulfilment results in constant increase in energy efficiency in the organization and thereby in improvement of the competitive position on the market.

BASIC PRINCIPLES OF ISO 50001

In 2011, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) issued the new international standard ISO 50001 – Energy management systems. This standard similarly to the previous EN 16001 provides a methodology based on a structure of requirements resulting in decrease in the energy intensity of the organization and continuous increase in its energy efficiency. The system is based on a complete overview of consumptions of all main and additional equipments (buildings, technologies etc.), improvement of consumption monitoring during all activities and determination of energy utilizability and consumption limits for the most important energy applications.

ČSN EN ISO 50001 Energy management systems is compatible with ISO 9001 and especially with ISO 14001. Therefore the energy management system can be implemented independently or also through an existing environmental management system or quality management system.

REVISION OF ISO 50001

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has completed a revision of the ISO 50001 standard. The new version of ISO 50001:2018 was released on 20 August 2018 and a three-year transition period has been provided for implementing the standard in companies, i.e. the standard should be implemented by 20 August 2021. Validity of certificates issued according to the Standard ISO 50001:2011 is set as well – the longest term till August 20, 2021.

At the moment, the Czech translation of the standard is being prepared and its inclusion into the system of technical standards ČSN is expected. Subsequently, the accreditation procedure for ISO 50001:2018 will be commenced at Czech Accreditation Institute (CAI).

The certification, surveillance and recertification of management systems according to ISO 50001:2011 will run no longer than February 20, 2020. Due to the limitation of certificates issued under ISO 50001:2011 to 20 August, 2021, we recommend that all applicants for certification and recertification begin to timely plan the implementation of ISO 50001:2018 requirements into their energy management system.

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN REVISION OF ISO 50001

  • unification of the chapters of the Standard according to Annex SL (i.e. the same structure as ISO 9001: 2015 and ISO 14001: 2015);
  • placed a stronger emphasis on the role of top management;
  • updating definitions of some terms, adopting new definitions, including definitions for energy performance management;
  • added details on the energy data collection plan and related requirements (previously this was known as the “energy measurement plan“);
  • introduced the concept of normalization of energy performance indicators [EnPl(s)] and associated energy baselines [EnB(s)].

OBJECTIVES, BENEFITS, ADVANTAGES

  • comprehensive and understandable approach to the intelligent energy use
  • optimization of the absolute energy consumption
  • optimization of energy sources
  • energy efficiency increase
  • provable cost saving thanks to the system approach
  • energy control based on measurability
  • increase in competitiveness on the market.

FOR WHOM THE STANDARD IS INTENDED?

  • The ISO 50001 standard can be introduced in any firm (with various size and number of employees, with various business activities, site of action), which is interested in continuous decrease in energy consumptions. That means in practice that provisions of the standard can be applied in the industry, third market, state administration, self-administration etc.
  • manufacturing companies
  • energy companies
  • real estate management services providers
  • hospitals
  • educational facilities
  • hotels and hostels ...

CERTIFICATION PROCESS

  • The certification procedure has the following basic phases
  • processing of documentation (applicant)
  • introduction of the management system into practice
  • application for certification (applicant)
  • certification by the accredited certification body
  • assessment and registration of the client's application to the certification
  • completion of a contract on certification audit execution (the certification audit runs in two phases)
  • auditor team determination
  • audit plan processing
  • verification of facts in phases:
    • a) client's documentation review
    • b) analysis of facts on the site
  • report elaboration on the certification audit result
  • assessment of the audit report by the certification body
  • issue of the certificate
  • surveillance audit
    • o the surveillance audit is done once a year during the three-year period of validity of the certificate. Based on the result of the surveillance a decision on the verification of validity of the certificate is issued, which is valid until the next surveillance or decision on suspension of the certificate. In the event that there are major nonconformities from the requirements of the standards, the certificate may be withrawn in extreme cases.
  • recertification audit
    • To ensure continuous validity of certification, a recertification audit should take place based on the certificate holder’s decision in the third year before expiration of the certificate’s validity.
