new ICP spectrometer in ITC labs

Analytical laboratory has recently purchased new ICP spectrometer Agilent 5800. The spectrometer is intended for determination of elements in water solutions, leachates and mineralisates. It is used mainly for evaluation of food-contact materials, products for children, material analysis of plastics, rubbers and metals. Spectrometer can be also used for determination of elements, which are limited in electro-products by RoHS 3 directive. High sensitivity enable evaluation of products according to many national and European legislations.

DETERMINATION OF INDIVIDUAL ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (VOC) AND IDENTIFICATION OF THE EMITTED COMPOUNDS BY GC-MS/FID

In autumn 2019 our laboratory of analytical chemistry purchased gas chromatograph Shimadzu GCMS QP 2020 NX with mass spectromecter and flame ionization detector, which is used for analysis of emission of organic substances (VOC) mainly for automotive materials.

Determination of VOC by this method meets the requirements:
- VW 50180 (CLP classification of VOC emission in accordance with Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 included)
- PV 3341
- VDA 277
- VCS 1027,2759

Laboratory is on the List of accepted service laboratories by the VW Group for test according to PV 3341!

Occupational health and safety make an important part of management of each organization, especially in connection with legal requirements of the country where the organization runs its business. PRINCIPLES OF CERTIFICATION ACCORDING TO ISO 45001

The structure of ISO 45001 standard is related to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards differences from the mentioned standards can be found especially in the areas related to identification, control and reduction of work hazards. Certification according to ISO 45001 is established as an independent system beside QMS and EMS, or these systems are built simultaneously as integrated systems. ISO 45001 certificate guarantees that the occupational health and safety management system established in the company has been assessed by an accredited certification body and satisfies the requirements of ISO 45001 standard.

ISSUE OF NEW STANDARD ISO 45001

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has issued a new ISO 45001 Occupational health and safety management system – Requirements with guidance for use. The publication of the new ISO 45001:2018 standard took place on 12 March 2018, and a three-year transition period for its implementation in companies was set from that date to 12.3.2021. The validity of certificates issued according to CSN OHSAS 18001: 2008 / BS OHSAS 18001: 2007 is established in parallel - the latest by 12.3.2021.

Due to the situation with the occurrence of COVID -19, it is possible to postpone the transition to the new version of the standard by 6 months, term till September, 30 2021 (see: https://iaffaq.com/).

Certification and recertification of management systems according to OHSAS 18001:2007 will run no later than March 12, 2020. Due to the limitation of certificates issued under OHSAS 18001:2007, we recommend that all applicants for certification and recertification begin to timely plan the implementation of ISO 45001:2018 requirements into their occupational health and safety management systems.

For migrating from OHSAS 18001:2007 to ISO 45001:2018, the IAF (International Accreditation Forum) issued an document IAF MD 21:2018, in which it is stipulated to increase the duration of the audit by 1 auditor man-day additionally to verify the new ISO 45001 requirements against OHSAS 18001.

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN NEW ISO 45001

  • focusing on stakeholders and the context of an organization with benefits for work safety and health protection
  • focusing on searching and dealing with risks and opportunities
  • greater interconnection of strategy, policy and goals to ensure the fulfillment of the business plan, ie the main direction of business with regard to the protection of occupational safety and health, with emphasis on the prevention of fatal accidents, accidents at work and occupational diseases and improvement and ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for workers and other persons whose work is managed by the organization
  • less emphasis on documentation according to the organization's real needs
  • leadership - shifting responsibilities to top management and more accurately defining roles, clearly defining senior management's responsibility for OHSMS and participation of "non-managerial" workers
  • communication - equal emphasis on internal and external communication
  • MS review - a more detailed description of input and output requirements
  • preventive measures - the request was lifted as a consequence of the introduction of a new requirement to look for and address health and safety risks and opportunities of OHS and planning for action
  • controlling or influencing outsourced processes and their delimitation within the framework of the OHSMS
  • emphasis on the fulfillment of legal and other requirements.

BENEFITS OF CERTIFICATION

  • Improving occupational health and safety system established on all organization’s levels;
  • Systematic reduction of hazards impeding safety and health of all people influenced by the  organization’s activities, products or services;
  • Reducing incidence of occupational diseases and injuries – improving performance;
  • Minimising costs associated with accidents at the workplace;
  • Attestation of the commitment to meet the statutory requirements in the area of occupational safety.

CERTIFICATION PROCESS

  • The certification process consists of the following basic phases:
  • processing of documentation
  • implementation of a OHSMS
  • certification by an accredited certification body
    • evaluation and filing of the certification request of the client
    • concluding an agreement on certification audit (certification audit is divided into two steps)
    • appointing a team of auditors
    • preparation of an audit plan
    • verification of facts in the following stages:
      a) examination of client documentation
      b) verification of facts in situ
    • preparation of a report on the results of the certification audit
    • assessment of the audit report by a certification body
    • issuance of the certificate
  • surveillance audit
    o the surveillance audit is done once a year during the three-year period of validity of the certificate. Based on the result of the surveillance a decision on the verification of validity of the certificate is issued, which is valid until the next surveillance or decision on suspension of the certificate. In the event that there are substantial deviations from the requirements of the standards, the certificate may be revoked in extreme cases.
  • recertification audit
    To ensure continuous validity of certification, a recertification audit should take place based on the certificate holder’s decision in the third year before expiration of the certificate’s validity.
